Shantilal Shanghvi Eye Institute is a not-for-profit, comprehensive eye institute with a mission to reduce the prevalence of visual impairment and preventable blindness. We believe that every patient deserves access to world-class eye care. We offer a wide range of services, including preventive care, diagnostics, therapeutics, and a center for low vision and visual rehabilitation. Our experienced team of doctors use state-of-the-art technology to provide the latest diagnostic and treatment options, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Shantilal Shanghvi Foundation is a Not-for-Profit initiative by Mr. Dilip Shanghvi, the founder of Sun Pharmaceutical Ind. Ltd.

Shantilal Shanghvi Foundation is dedicated to transforming lives through healthcare and education initiatives. We are committed to making a positive impact in our community by providing access to essential resources and empowering individuals to achieve their full potential.

Our projects include Shantilal Shanghvi Eye Institute, which provides comprehensive eye care and treatment for all, and a cancer day-care and sanatorium, which offers compassionate care and support for cancer patients and their families. The foundation also runs a school that provides quality education and a nurturing environment for underprivileged children.

Sailesh Desai

Trustee : Shantilal Shanghvi Foundation

Mr Sailesh Desai is Trustee at Shantilal Shanghvi Foundation.

Mr Desai has over 3 decades of hands-on experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He launched Milmet laboratories, an eye care company at a time when there were very few companies present in this segment. Milmet was later merged with Sun Pharmaceuticals.

Mr Desai holds a BSc degree from the University of Calcutta.

Taraprasad Das

MD, FRCS, DSc, FAMS  

Chief Advisor and Mentor          

Dr. Das is a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal specialist with a research interest in endophthalmitis, diabetic retinopathy, and public health. Current leadership includes: Vice Chairman (Emeritus), LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India; Professor of Ophthalmology, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou, China; Adjunct Professor, Ophthalmology, School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY; Chairman, Universal Eye Health Program (Sunetra), Government of Odisha, and Vice President, Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO)

Dr. Das has received 18 competitive research grants and has delivered 24 eponymous lectures in India and the Asia Pacific region. He is a fellow of the Academy of Asia- Pacific Professors in Ophthalmology (AAPPO) and the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), India. He previously held key executive positions in several professional organizations in India (AIOS, VISION 2020, VRSI) and internationally (APVRS, ARVO, IAPB).

Dr. Das’ recognitions include Honaris Causa (Revenshaw University, 2011) and Padmasri (Government of India, 2013). Dr. Das is ranked top 2% of scientists in the world (2021, Stanford) and 100 most influential ophthalmologists in the Asia Pacific Region (2022, APJO).

Dr. Somasheila Murthy

M.B.B.S, M.S., D.O.M.S., F.C.P.S

Medical Director   

Dr. Murthy brings 22 years of experience to SSEI. Before joining, she was the Chief of the Cornea service at LVPEI, Hyderabad India. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Rochester, NY, USA.

Dr. Murthy is a nationally renowned cornea- cataract-refractive surgery expert par excellence and an expert in ocular inflammation. She had her schooling in Mumbai and Delhi and her medical education, undergraduate and post-graduate in Mumbai. After her Master’s in Ophthalmology, she completed two fellowships, one in the Cornea and Anterior segment of the eye in LVPEI, Hyderabad, India, and the other in Uveitis and Pathology at Doheny Eye Institute, Los Angeles, USA. Soon after her fellowship, she joined as a research ophthalmologist in the LVPEI, working on a new drug delivery device in intraocular inflammation. With over 190 peer-reviewed research publications (current h-index 31; citations 3040), Dr. Murthy’s majority of research interest lies in intraocular inflammation. A sought-after speaker, people’s manager, and team builder, she is currently a member of the Scientific Committee of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS)

She has a deep passion for women’s empowerment. In her spare time, she loves to travel to see new places and meet new people.
