Low vision is a reduced level of vision that cannot be fully corrected with conventional glasses or any medical or surgical intervention. The most common causes of low vision include Age-related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Retinopathy of Prematurity and Optic Atrophy.
If traditional medical or surgical treatments are unsuccessful in preventing or restoring vision loss, our comprehensive ophthalmologist may recommend that you visit our Center for Low Vision & Rehabilitation.
The following symptoms may warrant a referral for low vision rehabilitation:
The importance of early referral is also important in children. Visual impairment can interfere with learning in an academic environment, and early referral may increase children’s comfort with optical aids and improve their functional vision, allowing them to perform better in school.
Our center offers an evaluation of low vision devices, including magnifiers, to aid individuals with low vision in reading. Furthermore, the center provides social, educational, and vocational rehabilitation services that involve training individuals with low vision to maximize their functional abilities.
