What’s Shaping Eye Care?
This research was conducted by a team at a tertiary eye care centre, focusing on the outcomes of using a Tenon patch graft (TPG) to treat corneal perforations in patients with resolving infective keratitis. The study involved collaboration among ophthalmologists specializing in corneal diseases and surgical interventio
The study retrospectively examined patients who underwent TPG for corneal perforations caused by infective keratitis between 2021 and 2023. The main finding was that TPG successfully restored the structural integrity of the eye in 93% of cases (14 out of 15 eyes) within one month. All infections were controlled with additional antimicrobial therapy, and only one patient required further intervention due to a repeat perforation.
This research is significant because it demonstrates TPG as an effective, non- antigenic tissue derived from the patients eye, no need of procurement of any donor material and viable surgical option for managing corneal perforations due to infective keratitis. By restoring the eye's integrity and controlling infection, TPG can help preserve vision and prevent more severe complications, offering clinicians an alternative approach in challenging cases.
